Lazy Lizard Workout

Upcoming 5K races

I have to take a little break from actual training but it doesn’t mean I gave up. I am reading Runner’s World, learning a lot of new things, and even subscribed to RW for one year.

I am also trying to make my plans and searching for the upcoming races. I think while I am training for my first 10K I can do one 5K race a month. Here are the races I am thinking about.

July 22, 2012 – West Valley Dash of Hope 5K – Vasona Lake Park, Los Gatos, CA

August 11, 2012 – Dammit Run 5 miles – Los Gatos, CA

September 22, 2012 – Trail Hog 5K – Joseph D. Grant County Park, San Jose, CA

I am not 100% sure about the August and September races since the first one is 5 miles not 5K, and the second one is a trail race (need to specially train for this one) but I am pretty condifent about doing the one in Los Gatos in July. Just less than 3 weeks from now. Very excited:)

HH10K – W1D2

I totally messed up the schedule. Wednesdays are 30 min CT but I wanted to go for a run. I thought I would do 2.0 m run. I started. It was hot, and after 1 1/4 m I stopped. But I brought my jumping rope, and did some jumping followed by stretch. Nice to do something different for a change.

When I got home I grabbed my hand weights and did some strength. Feels soooo good!

Runner’s World

Finally I treated myself to a copy of Runner’s World.

I brought it home and set it aside till I could spend some quality time reading it. Starting a new book or magazine is like meeting and getting to know someone new. I don’t like doing it in a hurry. Being a beginner, I am interested in everything – fr0m feature articles to ads. Wow, what a great and inspirational reading! Lots of useful info, amazing stories. Looks like I’ll be subscribing to RW at least for 1 year.

HH10K – W1D1

Now when 5K is done, it is time to think what to do next. I know I am slow, and I also have a way to go in terms of running technique but I also run longer distances.

After-race Sunday was lazy, and I took my time to think about my running plans for the next 3 months. I am going to start training for 10K and also run 5K races once a month – it will allow me both to progress and work on my speed.

I’ve googled different training plans, read some blogs and finally picked Hal Higdon’s 10K Training Guide – Novice Program. It looks very balanced to me – I really like the combination of running and CT (cross training). The program is 8 weeks, 6 days a week. I’ve decided to mark it as “HH10K”, and mark each day as W1D1 etc – it will help me to stay on track.

Today I’ve started. According to the program, Mondays following the long run on Sundays, are stretch&strengh. I didn’t do anything last Sunday, and my body was screaming for a run that’s why I decided to switch Monday and Tuesday, and do a 2.5 mile run today.

It was my first post-race run, and I was so tired after the first mile. I was amazed I had done the race just 2 days ago:) But the weather was nice, my body was ready for it and I just moved forward – and was happy with myself.

Packard Summer Scamper 5K results

The race results are now up! My time was 35:17:2. Overall result 412 out of 992. Since it was my first race, it is my PR for now.

In my age group I was the 34th out of 93.

I think not too bad for the first time. Next race my goal is to run out of 35 min.
